In Harmony Telford’s trip to Sweden

Posted by on 8:04 pm in Children, Featured, News, Teachers | 0 comments

These kids have matured by three years in one week,’ said one of the teachers as we walked through Gothenburg. That really is the best description of the effect that the trip to Sweden has had on this group of young musicians from In Harmony Telford and Sistema in Norwich. They arrived on the 14th of June, clearly excited but also nervous about performing in the El Sistema SwedenSide by Side youth camp. Most of them had never travelled abroad. None had ever played in an orchestra of almost 600 children, surrounded by young musicians...

Posted by on 6:08 pm in Featured, News, Teachers | 0 comments

In Harmony aims to inspire and transform the lives of children and families in deprived communities, through the power and disciplines of orchestral music-making. It is inspired by the Venezuelan El Sistema, which aims to change the lives of children in exceptionally deprived circumstances. The In Harmony programme is modelled around an immersive experience, where children play instruments together several times a week from an early age, within a whole-school and/or community-based approach. In Harmony is funded by the Department for Education...

Music takes our young musicians to Italy, Sweden and Canada

Over the next three months, children and tutors from English Sistema programmes will have gone to Italy, Sweden and Canada as part of a European Union Culture Programme funded exchange between Europe and Canada. SMEEC, as it is known, will see fifty seven English children taking part, with each visit culminating in a performance. The first of the exchanges took place in Italy this month, when ten children from In Harmony Telford travelled to Milan to perform with other young musicians from Italy and Angola, in an event titled Concerto per...

Teachers sharing best practice

Teachers from Sistema in Norwich and the In Harmony programmes in Lambeth, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham and Telford will meet at Sage Gateshead on 27 May to discuss best practices, as part of a Youth Music funded project led by Sistema England. ‘This is a day of sharing and learning, which ultimately benefit the children and the communities that these programmes work with,’ said Fiona Cunningham, CEO of Sistema England. Over the past months, teachers have been visiting each participating programme, to identify best practices...

In Harmony Telford trip to Milan

The pizzas – as one of the children put it – were massive, but much larger were the smiles of the young musicians last Sunday, after they performed at Milan’s Dal Verme theatre. It was the end of an adventure that started with an invitation from Sistema England and Sistema Italia, that had most of the children get on an airplane for the first time in their lives, and that has made everybody at In Harmony Telford and Old Park Primary extremely proud. The ten young musicians were selected through auditions held at the office of Mrs Mandie...
