Cosmic Dances – CBSO interactive programme for In Harmony
On the 27th March, Year 6 pupils and staff from Heron Cross Primary and Old Park Primary visited Symphony Hall, Birmingham to work with the CBSO. Pupils arrived at lunchtime and worked with the CBSO musicians all afternoon.
The programme included a tour around the hall, interactive music workshops, observing the full orchestral rehearsal in the concert hall and a visit to the nearby IKON contemporary art gallery to compose music and poetry based on the young people’s feelings of the day.
Conducted by Diego Matheuz, an El Sistema alumni, pupils were also given the opportunity to tall openly and ask questions about his career and inspirations in music. Cello Soloist, Johannes Moser and In Harmony Champion and Principle Cellist of the CBSO, Eduardo Vassallo also joined the panel that were fantastically generous and open with the answers to the questions the In Harmony pupils has to ask.
Parents and siblings from each of the pupils families arrived at the world class venue to enjoy a sit down meal and vibrant conversations with their children. One hundred and forty people then watched a simply incredible CBSO performance including a European Premiere of Magnetar, electric cello concerto and Prokofievs highlights from Romeo and Juliet.
Comments from parents on the way out included “Thank you so much, we would never have been able to bring our whole family to such a great place and concert”, “I wasn’t sure this was going to be right for us as a family, but we loved it!”
More family learning activities are planned for term two and for the next two years, keeping the community and social aspects of the programme at the core of the delivery.
